ZMATA at the 22nd U.S. Open

This past weekend our Bay Area Soul Fighters traveled across the Bay to the Cow Palace in Daly City to compete at the 22nd U.S. Open Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship. We brought 50 students from ZMATA to battle on the mats against the field of over 1400 competitors, representing over 100 different academies from across the land. After the end of the two-day event, we brought home a total of 45 medals!

The event started with our kids team along with our brother academy from Redding, CA. (Rice Brothers Academy) taking home the championship kids trophy. Back-to-Back U.S. Open Kid Champions! Our kids team tallied up a total of 197 points to etch out our rivals (Checkmat) who had 187 total points followed by Coalition 95 with 159 points. Our kids from ZMATA brought home 10 gold medals, 8 silver medals as well as 5 bronze!

After the kids clinched the 2017 U.S. Open title, it was time for the adults to step on the mat. Our adults competition team also performed very well, coming up short by only 17 points from making the podium and receiving a team trophy. Our adults team placed fourth behind the combined RG-CT team, Coalition 95 and Ares. With that said, our ZMATA team had 8 U.S. Open Champions, 8 silver medalists and 6 bronze medalists.

We are so very proud of all of our teammates for stepping on the mat to challenge themselves and their Jiu-Jitsu at one of the toughest Jiu-Jitsu competitions around. It was a long hard fought weekend full of emotions, excitement and love. In closing, we would like to thank all our teammates, family, and friends for cheering, supporting, coaching as well as preparing our soul-brothers and soul-sisters for battle. It was truly a great weekend to remember!
